General Description:
This position is responsible for providing and supervising police and other assigned staff that secure and protect NVCC campuses, off-site centers, and property through crime prevention activities. NOVA Officers have full authority to enforce State laws and regulations as found in all other police departments within the Commonwealth of Virginia. This is an entry to mid-level position.
The NOVA Police Department is established as a College-wide entity with the responsibility to maintain the safety and security of all property owned or controlled by the College. As such, all police department employees are subject to short-term and long-term reassignments that may include different locations, rotating schedules, and duties depending on the needs of the Department and/or staff professional development.
Duties and Tasks:
- Provides support services to the police department by providing property and evidence management, records management, communications center management, and quartermaster.
- As needed, this position oversees all police aspects at the campus level to include oversight and supervision of staff.
- Ensure security for College and personal property at the College through crime prevention activities and patrol.
- Patrolling, investigating (reported and suspected) criminal activity, and enforcing State traffic and parking laws.
- Law Enforcement Officers also interact with the public in a fair and impartial manner, regardless of situation, while on-duty at NVCC campuses and centers.
- Ensure thorough investigation of all reported and suspected criminal activity.
- Ensure safety of the community through the enforcement of State laws and College regulations. This is accomplished by patrol efforts, by possible shift rotation, by interacting with the public in a fair and impartial manner regardless of situation, and by enforcing the laws and regulations through use of the same police powers as found in all other police departments in cities, towns, and counties in the Commonwealth.
Required KSAs:
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and techniques of law enforcement, investigation, National Incident Management System, security, crime detection and prevention.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in evidence and property management, records management, communications center management, and quartermaster
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the use of police equipment and weaponry.
- Ability to effectively supervise Law Enforcement Officers and support personnel.
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the Commonwealth of Virginia laws, local ordinances, and College policies.
- Must meet physical and mental job demands.
- Ability to maintain DCJS certification.
- Ability to effectively testify in court proceedings.
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to speak and understand English.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Good computer skills
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must be a United States citizen
- Must be a certified Police Officer under DCJS guidelines
- Licensed driver with insurable driving record
- Significant law enforcement experience
- Successfully pass background investigation
- Ability to testify in court proceedings.
- Some experience with records management
- Some experience with property and evidence management
- Some experience with communications center management
- Some experience as a quartermaster
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate’s Degree
- Some supervisory experience
- Campus police experience
- Foreign language
