Job Description:


Empire State University seeks a dedicated, creative, and experienced educator to serve as the Director of Teaching, Learning, and Faculty Development. The successful candidate will oversee the Center for Mentoring, Learning, and Academic Innovation (CMLAI), SUNY Empire's teaching, learning, and faculty development center. They will have a record of peer-reviewed scholarship and demonstrated leadership in faculty development at all career stages. The director will expand an existing faculty and professional development program that supports and enhances inclusive excellence in scholarship, advising, teaching, and creative engagement with emerging pedagogical opportunities.

Working collaboratively with faculty, professionals, and other academic leaders, the director will build the center into a model for researching and disseminating evidence-based strategies for excellence in teaching, learning, advising, and mentoring in flexible delivery modalities (e.g., online, hybrid, and independent study) to diverse learners. The director will oversee a small staff and report to the Associate Provost of Faculty and Academic Excellence.

This is a faculty appointment and highly qualified candidates may be eligible for continuing appointment (i.e., tenure) at a senior academic rank, after consultation with the appropriate department faculty and academic leadership.

Duties associated with this position include:
  • Maintaining, strengthening, and supporting a community of faculty, mentors/advisors, and other professionals in pursuit of SUNY Empire's mission, strategic goals, and core values related to teaching, learning, and mentoring.
  • Developing and implementing a strategic professional development agenda for SUNY Empire's faculty, mentors/advisors, and other professionals in teaching, learning, advising, and mentoring roles.
  • Developing and curating evidence-based and data-informed resources to support teaching excellence across schools and programs.
  • Overseeing faculty and professional advisor orientation and onboarding.
  • Collaborating with the Office of Academic Affairs, deans, and other constituencies to identify systematic improvements to mentoring/advising, and teaching activities and processes across programs and schools.
  • Identifying opportunities to engage in or support research projects, including externally funded opportunities that advance the effectiveness of teaching, mentoring/advising, and learning.
  • Creating and implementing a systematic approach to onboarding, training, and retaining highly qualified and effective adjunct instructors.
  • Maintaining an active program of research and scholarly engagement.
  • Supervising CMLAI staff.

Requirements:


Required Qualifications:
  • An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university or comparable non-U.S. college or university.
  • A minimum of three to five years of teaching experience in a higher education, including online modalities.
  • Record of teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Significant direct experience in faculty development programming and activities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the current scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrated skill in developing positive workplace culture.
  • Experience working with diverse populations and a commitment to DEISJ.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, utilizing multiple modalities.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A minimum of two years of leadership experience in an educational setting.
  • Experience providing ongoing, evidence-based professional development in an educational setting.
  • Experience building community among professionals and faculty (i.e. forming communities of practices, leading professional development cohorts)
  • Ability to successfully manage complex projects and maintain progress towards strategic goals.

  • Occasional travel to SUNY Empire locations and events may be required.

Rank/Salary: Open-rank, 12-month appointment; salary and stipend commensurate with experience.
