STARTING SALARY: $43,000.00 or Comparable salary based on experience
HOURS: 40 Hours per week - to be scheduled by the Chief of Police. Anything over 40 hours per week will be payable at time and a half, unless specified otherwise.
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Chief of Police

TOWN VEHICLE: A work vehicle will be provided if within 25 miles of the Town Office and shall be used only for official business of the Town of Smithsburg. Maintenance must be kept up at all times, as it is an emergency vehicle. May be used to go back and forth to work and within the boundaries of job-related work.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must be able to pass a thorough background investigation including a polygraph/voice stress analyzer test. Pass a physical examination. Possess a valid Maryland Driver's License. Have basic computer skills and be able to learn the RMS system used by the Department.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform general duty police work in the protection of life and property utilizing foot patrol, bicycle patrol and marked and unmarked patrol vehicles to prevent and/or detect the commission of crime. Enforce the city ordinances, criminal laws, motor vehicle laws, etc. Patrol Officers provide assistance to the citizens of the Town of Smithsburg. They respond to calls and complaints and take the necessary police action; serve warrants and court papers, investigate motor vehicle accidents, and file necessary reports; gather evidence, locate witnesses, take statements, and arrest offenders if needed; and are responsible for filing neat, accurate reports concerning cases and incidents in which he/she was involved.
Patrol Officers spend most of their time on the street patrolling the Town and making patrol checks on businesses, schools, and homes. This position involves shift work and requires officers to respond to all calls for service within the Smithsburg Town Limits. Proactive patrol is necessary to ensure the security of business and residential areas of the Town. The Smithsburg Police Department also assists the Washington County Sheriffs Office and the Maryland State Police through Mutual Aid Agreements.
All duties shall be performed at the direction of the Chief of Police in accordance with Federal, State and Municipal laws and policies and procedures of the Smithsburg Police Department.
TRAINING: Applicants must presently be or have been a MD Certified Police Officer within the last three years. Levels of training shall be maintained as mandated by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
