Job Summary
This position is needed in the Department of Behavioral Science to facilitate the planning and
conduct of the College of Medicine and Department of Behavioral Science medical education
program. It is designed to strengthen teaching and scholarship efforts by adding specific
expertise in medical student education to the Department's tenure-track faculty.
The Medical Educational Program Coordinator position is designed to assist the Chair in
discharging the medical educational mission of the Department. This person will assist the Chair
in relating to various constituencies as follows:
1. Departmental Faculty-
a. To assist with medical educational course planning and administration at the
Lexington and regional campuses;
b. To partner with the community to identify medical education opportunities;
c. To assist in the development of new content for medical educational courses;
d. To assist in reviewing and strengthening faculty medical student teaching skills;
e. To communicate student inputs from evaluations and student liaison groups;
f. To inform and remind faculty of relevant of course conduct;
g. To liaise with the Department's Director of Graduate Studies for the management
of the Department teaching mission.
2. Medical Students-
a. To teach in the medical education program by being a small group instructor in
our medical education courses;
b. To receive student evaluations on all departmental medical student courses and
direct them to faculty and Chair;
c. To counsel students individually on problems that arise relevant to the medical
educational program, and when appropriate, mediate student-faculty disputes;
d. To assist medical students in selecting and developing elective and tutorial course
experiences.
3. COM Office of Medical Education-
a. To provide program data as needed to update the College's database;
b. To review yearly National Board of Medical Examiners Part I examination and
student results to identify new areas for course development;
c. To represent the Department at meetings convened by the Office of Medical
Education;
d. To be available for service on University, College and Departmental educational
committees;
e. To act as the Department's primary contact to the Office of Medical Education on
curriculum matters.
In addition to these responsibilities for relating to various constituencies, the Medical
Educational Program Coordinator will also be expected to participate in scholarship that is
related to the medical educational mission of the department. For example, projects that develop
and evaluate innovative approaches to teaching medical students are expected. Evidence of
scholarship includes publication of essays, research reports, articles, and book chapters in hard
copy and web-based formats; scholarly presentations about teaching, participation in
conferences, colloquia, workshops, and training sessions, external funding, and/or teaching
awards. Communication of research results beyond the Department is expected through oral and
written presentations within and beyond the institution.
