The College of Architecture and Design at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor to teach in the Graphic Design program beginning August 1, 2024. The successful candidate will join colleagues in the Graphic Design program in the School of Design. We seek applicants who can build upon and broaden the expertise that currently exists across the Graphic Design faculty. Candidates should have a terminal Graphic Design degree (MFA, MGD, or MDes with a design emphasis or equivalent). The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.

Assistant Professor of Graphic Design, Job Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will join Graphic Design colleagues as part of a progressive design education environment. With a teaching load of two courses per semester, this individual will contribute to the continued growth and development of the undergraduate curriculum. The candidate must be capable of teaching across all levels in the undergraduate BFA and bring an interest in curriculum development. In addition, the faculty member will be expected to pursue an active research agenda as required in a Research 1 institution and conduct service activities on both the School, College, and University level.

The School of Design, situated within the College of Architecture and Design, encompasses a dynamic academic environment, alongside the Schools of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Landscape Architecture. This position offers a distinctive opportunity for candidates with an interest in pioneering cross-disciplinary research initiatives. Within both the College and the School, there exists a nurturing and collaborative atmosphere that fosters faculty development, enabling designers to contribute significantly to research, teaching, and public engagement.

The College of Architecture and Design is committed to staying on the leading edge of technology and innovation. The candidate joining our team will receive a generous start-up package and have access to state-of-the-art technology and resources. Resources available to the college include the Digital Futures Lab, an AR/VR/XR design studio and the Fab Lab, an expansive 22,000 sq ft. production facility equipped with an array of analog and digital fabrication tools. These facilities also include a Robotics Lab dedicated to design automation. In addition, the college supports the School of Design with the creation and maintenance of a full graphic design print production lab and support for national and international student field trips and classes.

The Assistant Professor of Graphic Design will be an integral member of the School of Design faculty; therefore, the candidate should exhibit the following to be considered eligible:

Required qualifications:

Applicants must provide evidence of:
  • Terminal degree in Graphic Design (i.e., MFA, MGD, MDes in Graphic Design) or in a related discipline, by appointment start date
  • Demonstrated record of creative research/activity
  • Demonstrated ability to teach Graphic Design courses at the university level
Preferred qualifications:

The successful candidate should:
  • Demonstrate commitment to research
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional experience in design practice
  • Demonstrate ability to teach across the curriculum from introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels courses
  • Demonstrate ability to teach additional courses depending on area(s) of specialization
  • Demonstrate knowledge of emerging technologies that are grounded in contemporary concepts, principles, and/or design practices
